Artist Statement

In the beginning art was rooted in ritual and magic employed to mediate or propitiate the unseen animating forces behind the outward manifestations of an awesome arbitrary over-powering material world -- nature. Then and now, art was and is a projection of the impact of the world upon the consciousness of the artist; a revelation of the artist's inner reality.

The fundamental purpose of art is just this: to strike a chord of resonance--a harmonic--with the inner life of others by a direct appeal to the emotions. Art expresses the inner world by signs and symbols allowing the spiritual realm a material presence--an outward and visible sign of an inward and spiritual grace.

In my work specifically, symbolic form is created by means of mass and volume. The basic vocabulary utilizes plane surfaces which capture or modulate light and hollow spaces to evoke the mystery of dark inner sanctums--grotto, cavern, catacomb, labyrinth--the regenerative womb or--the ultimate void--the choice is the beholder's. On another level I attempt to show the echos and correspondences between artifacts of culture/technology and elements of biological/geological provenance: alike, all a manifestation of nature.

I posit my work as a joyous contradiction to the appearance of the universe as ruled by the sentiments of chance and meaninglessness--a decidedly pagan thrust to render the world intelligible by animating the inanimate; attempting an equilibrium between inner and outer reality and assuming meaning in the face of the apparent problematic and the great imponderable.
